NGC 253 is one of the brightest galaxies in the sky along with the Andromeda Galaxy, M31. It resides in the constellation Sculptor near the South Galactic Pole and at magnitude 7.1 is easy to find even with a pair of binoculars. It is classified as a starburst galaxy because of its especially active star formation activity.
