AR 1504

Sunspot AR 1504 has developed a delta class magnetic field and has become a potential source of powerful X-class flares that are capable of planet-wide radio blackouts and long lasting radiation storms. The upper image was taken through a Calcium K filter which captures the chromosphere or outer and hottest layer of the Sun. The lower image was taken 24 hours later through a hydrogen alpha filter.
