Mars January 6, 2010

Mars transited highest and clearest in the sky at 2:28am early this morning. Though the feature sparse Tharsis region dominates this side of Mars, many large clouds add interest to this image. The dark outlines of Utopia (just below the large northern polar cap) and Mare Sirenum to the south are well positioned too. The red planet continues to approach closer to Earth and is now 13.2 arc seconds in size.
